Intel Mobile Pentium 4 Processor Supporting Hyper-Threading
Technology
On Sept. 23, 2003 Intel Corporation introduced the Mobile Intel®
Pentium® 4 processor supporting Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology
for portable notebook PCs, commonly referred to as desktop replacement
notebooks.
The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology offers
frequencies up to 3.20 GHz, and power management features that enable
lower thermals than its desktop counterpart. Notebooks based on the
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology allow users
to take better advantage of such multithreaded and processor-intensive
multimedia applications as video encoding, digital media and gaming.
HT Technology allows the portable notebook PC's processor to simultaneously
work on two separate threads, improving performance when multiple applications
are running. For example, a user can play an immersive game while encoding
audio or video, compressing images or compositing special effects.
HT Technology offers better responsiveness and performance when multitasking
with existing applications. Performance also increases significantly
with current "multithreaded" software and performance headroom
for the next wave of multithreaded applications.
The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology works
with the Intel® 852GME and Intel® 852PM chipsets and is built
on the Intel® NetBurst microarchitecture. It features a 533
MHz system bus, 512Kb L2 cache, and supports advanced mobile power management,
including Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology, Deep Sleep and Deeper
Sleep.
Speed Comparison. This is currently Intel's fastest mobile processor
putting it on equal ground with AMD's mobile version of the Athlon 64.
The Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology at 3.2
GHz is also much faster than Intel's Centrino at 1.7 GHz, as the 1.7
GHz Centrino is a little slower than a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4-M. However,
the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology is lucky
if it has half the battery life of a Centrino system, so there are trade-offs
for increased speed.
Intel® 852PM and Intel® 852GME chipsets, are optimized
for the Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor, and features a 533
MHz system bus and up to 2 GB of high-speed DDR 333/266 memory.
The Intel 852GME Chipset delivers intense, realistic 3D graphics with
sharp images with Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 technology and offers
an AGP4X interface, enabling over 1 GB/s of graphics bandwidth interface
for high-quality 2D, 3D, and video streams.
